ACWWS’s 13th international conference will be held in Paramaribo, Suriname from the 8th to the 12th of May 2012. The theme, "The Caribbean, the Land and the People: Women’s Efforts, Women’s Lives," highlights the role of women in the building of Caribbean communities; it also extends the phrase "cultural producers" by acknowledging the many women who earn livings by working the soil, growing food and other agricultural products.

With all the active creative writers in Suriname as well as the country’s vast cultural variety, this conference explores new challenges in the creation and study of creative writing and cultural work in a kaleidoscopic way. Some critics may argue that life in the Caribbean restricts the development of creative work, identifying its so-called narrow focus and meager publishing opportunities as obstacles. Some cultural producers in the Caribbean region also express frustration with their poor recognition in literary and intellectual circles outside of the Caribbean region.

In selecting our theme, this conference explores the possibilities as well as the limits of creative life in the circum-Caribbean region. In doing so, we hope to explore the following questions: what challenges and opportunities do art producers have? which literary and artistic products does this region have and do these products deserve international attention? If so, what possibilities exist to raise the profile of the cultural and intellectual work globally?

The deadline for paper and panel proposals is 31 January 2012. (English CFP).
